Workplace injuries in the poultry and meat industries

A lot of work goes into the foods found in our nation’s grocery stores and on our dinner tables. The food industry is a big one in the U.S. and there are a wide range of different food-related jobs held by workers here in Louisiana and the rest of the country.

Now, some of these jobs can have particularly big safety concerns connected to them. A recent report points to poultry and meat processing jobs being among such positions.

The report was by the National Employment Law Project and it regarded serious injuries in workplaces in the United States. Among the things the report noted about the poultry and meat processing industries were that:

  • The poultry industry ranked 12th highest in reported severe workplace injuries.
  • Some poultry/meat processing companies ranked high in number of severe workplace injuries reported. These rankings were based on severe injury reports made to OSHA in 29 states.
  • Federal data indicates that poultry workers and meatpacking workers have a substantially higher workplace injury rate than the average U.S. worker.

A severe workplace injury can impact many areas of a person’s life. So, when a poultry/meat-processing worker suffers such an injury, it can be very important for them to have a complete picture of their legal situation. This includes being aware of whether they could pursue a personal injury claim over their injury. There are a variety of third-party claims that could potentially be brought in connection to workplace injuries. Whether bringing a third-party claim would be an option for a hurt worker depends on the details of how exactly they were hurt on the job. Skilled Louisiana personal injury attorneys can advise injured workers, such as injured poultry/meat-processing workers, on whether a person injury claim would be a possible compensation route for them.
