Five Louisiana anglers struck and injured by drunk driver

Fishing is a popular pastime in Louisiana. With spring and summer fast approaching, many people are dusting off their fishing gear and heading to the nearest body of water to catch a bite. Compared to many other water activities, fishing is not considered dangerous. However, a recent incident involving a drunk driver and some unfortunate teenage anglers is a reminder that injuries can occur even during a peaceful pastime like fishing.

Roadside fishing and a drunk driver

Five teenage anglers were fishing off the shoulder of a local road when they were struck by a drunk driver. According to police reports, the fishers ranged in age from 15 to 17 years. Three of the boys were flown to a hospital in New Orleans to be treated for serious  injuries. The other two teenagers sustained minor injuries that did not require hospitalization. A breathalyzer test showed that the driver’s blood alcohol content (BAC) was over the legal limit of 0.08. She was arrested and charged with vehicular negligent injuring, careless driving and a third-offense DWI.

When a drunk driver causes injuries

Drunk driving occurs far too frequently, and it often results in serious—or even catastrophic—injuries. Sometimes, these injuries can have lifelong consequences including physical pain, psychological trauma and permanent disability. Fortunately, the five teenagers in this story are expected to survive their injuries. Not everyone is so fortunate, though. The boys’ families have not yet pursued civil action against the driver. When someone is injured in a car accident, they have the option of filing a civil lawsuit to hold the driver accountable and receive compensation for their damages.
