Tips for dog owners to prevent dog bites

Dogs have become an integral part of life for many Americans. They can be beloved companions who provide much-needed unconditional love. But no matter how friendly a dog seems, they still pose the risk of injury if they bite an unfortunate human.

No one wants to believe that their friendly Fido is capable of attacking someone. However, data from the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) indicates that millions of Americans are bitten by dogs every year. And according to the AVMF, most of these bites are preventable.

Preventing dog bites

In honor of National Dog Bite Prevention Week, the foundation has released several tips for preventing dog bites. These tips can go a long way in reducing the frequency of dog bites. These are a few important things that dog owners and animal-lovers can do to prevent dogs from biting:

  • Socialize dogs with humans and other animals.
  • Supervise young children closely when they are near dogs.
  • Train your dog carefully before allowing it around humans or other animals.
  • Give your dog proper nutrition and regular exercise.
  • Do not let your dog roam in public unsupervised or without a leash.

Dog bites and lawsuits

Dog bites can cause more than just injury. They can also lead to lawsuits. When a dog attacks and causes injury, the victim may choose to sue the animal’s owner to receive compensation for their damages. They may also sue on the grounds of premise liability. This is because dog owners are responsible for keeping their property safe and injury-free. If a guest, mail carrier or even a trespasser is bitten by a dog on someone else’s property, they may have ground for a premise liability suit. For dog owners to avoid potential lawsuits, it is crucial to take every possible step to prevent dog bites.
