Rear-end chain reaction crash kills two in St. Tammany Parish

Rear-end traffic accidents can be especially devastating because the driver of the vehicle that is rear-ended may have little or no warning of the impending accident and is unable to take evasive measures. This phenomenon is especially common during periods of high traffic density. A recent rear-end collision on I-12 near its intersection with LA 1077 in St. Tammany Parish provides an unhappy example of such accidents.

The accident

An eastbound 2005 Toyota 4Runner was heading east on I-12 when the driver slowed for traffic. A 2016 Kia Sorrento slammed into the rear-end of the Toyota and pushed it into the rear-end of a Volvo tractor trailer that had stopped on the road ahead of the Toyota. Police have not yet determined why the Kia was unable to stop before hitting the Toyota. The driver of the Toyota was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. The passenger in the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene.

Theories of causation

Police do not believe that driver impairment was a factor in the collision, but they have not yet finished their investigation. Meanwhile they took blood samples from both of the surviving drivers and submitted the samples to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The driver of the Kia was cited for careless operation of a motor vehicle. Whether any further charges will be brought will depend upon the evaluation of the evidence by the St. Tammany Parish District Attorney’s Office.

Recovering damages

Anyone who has been injured or lost a loved-one in a similar accident may wish to seek damages for medical expenses, lost income and pain and suffering. The advice of a skilled accident attorney can be an invaluable aid. A knowledgeable lawyer can provide a useful evaluation of the evidence and suggest legal theories on which to base a case for recovering damages.
