Most dangerous occupations in Louisiana

Louisiana has a variety of industries that make up its economy, and some of them have jobs that require long hours and heavy manual labor. While these trades help put food on the table for numerous Louisianans, they happen to be some of the most dangerous in the country -- according to the Census of Fatal Occupational injuries, Louisiana has a higher rate of workplace injuries than many other states across the U.S. with 6.3 injuries per 100,000 workers.

Dangerous jobs in Louisiana

These are only some of the jobs here that are considered high-risk:

  • Chef/restaurant staff: With all the seafood the state brings in, the Cajun and Creole restaurant scene thrive because of it. While being a chef, line cook or wait staff member can be rewarding, but it does not come without potential hazards. While a culinary environment is typically fast-paced, those conditions can result in numerous injuries. Some of those include slip and falls, severe burns or exposure to sharp objects.
  • Oil rig workers: Many people who work on an oil rig face a variety of dangerous duties and toxins. These workers often have to worry about falling tools, equipment malfunctions and potential fire hazards. Rig workers are also subject to various chemicals from exposure to smoke and fossil fuels.
  • Law enforcement: Being a police officer can be an unsafe job anywhere, but it is especially dangerous here in Louisiana. That is due to the state’s higher than average violent crime rate, especially in New Orleans, where there are approximately 4 to 6 murders per 100,000 residents.

Workplace injuries deserve compensation

For many Louisianans, these jobs can be rewarding, but just because someone is passionate about their work does not mean it is safe. Those injured on the job through no fault of their own may need an attorney who can take the case to help get the compensation the injured deserve.
